I'd rather have it in one place, so that I don't have to follow a trail of
crumbs to find the actual code.  But maybe it's just personal preference.
If you disagree, don't change it just because I said so.  I'm just reacting
to the big snakes' nests of ifdefs we have in the source.  Any time it gets
worse I cringe.
