Hi there,
I just came across the above error message when I upgraded my OpenAFS
install from 1.2.2a to 1.2.8. The weird thing was that I upgraded on two
machines (both use kernel 2.4.18) and on the first machine it simply
worked while on the second I got "/afs: Not a directory".

Solution: Purge the client cache before starting the new client the
first time.

HTH! Tino.
