Ken,

Just based on my own personal experience it is my opinion that running an AFS server on the Windows platform isn't a good idea (and I'm the Windows guy in my IT shop). I believe the server software was originally ported by Transarc for NT 4.0 Server. Running it on Win2k is where I've seen problems.

When Transarc/IBM opened the source for AFS and the OpenAFS group was formed, I don't think the server part of the software has been maintained (if at all), and there's very few (if any) OpenAFS'ers that know anything about the Windows server source code. You'll get much more help (lots), if you try and run a server on Linux (or prefered, Solaris) since most of the OpenAFS'ers are Linux/UNIX buffs. I don't know of anyone who runs Windows AFS servers.

I had the same problem when I tried it just for kicks. I don't think you are going to be able to get it to work, but if you do I would be interested what the fix is, just for curiosity. If you have money, maybe you can contact Sine Momine for AFS consulting. See...

I've been told that they are the only source for true (using cash) AFS support now. That is unless you want to use the Transarc AFS product, which is already declared dead, but they will service you for a large enough fee.

I have been able to configure the client and connect to openafs.org and

However, I can't get the server to work. The Server Configuration Wizard
complains about not being able to open the log file (which I fixed by
creating the directory "C:\PROGRA~\IBM\AFS\Serverlogs" and restarting the
Wizard). When I get to the end, and click "Configure" it pauses for a
couple minutes and then gives error 0x00004634, saying it couldn't start the
BOS server.

So I did some Googling, and found three others who had the same problem;
unfortunately there were no replies to their messages:

https://lists.openafs.org/pipermail/openafs-info/2001-December/002665.html
https://lists.openafs.org/pipermail/openafs-info/2002-March/003833.html
https://lists.openafs.org/pipermail/openafs-info/2002-July/005151.html

The second link (from March of 2002) contains a log file, which is identical
to mine except for the date/time stamps and the name of the cell (hasbro.com
in the link, kenbeal.com in mine). Has the server ever worked on Windows
platforms?

I also searched for "4634 openafs bos" and got only one hit, which is:

http://www.slac.stanford.edu/comp/unix/afs/openafs/doc/html/AdminReference/a
uarf284.htm

This is an index, and has an entry under "bos commands" for "setrestart
(4634)" which leads to this page:

http://www.slac.stanford.edu/comp/unix/afs/openafs/doc/html/AdminReference/a
uarf117.htm#IDX4634

Unfortunately this doesn't really give me much useful information (it
doesn't seem to be related to the error message; it tells how to configure
the BOS server to restart processes).

Can anyone help me configure the AFS Server on Windows 2000?

        Thanks,
        Ken
