I *ask* users, including faculty members, to debug their environment all the time. That is how you improve the software. You are asking for a feature when you don't really know what the problem is. Masking a symptom does not fix things. It only makes it harder to fix them. The MacOS X AFS client you are deploying to your users is not fully debugged. We know there are problems with it. We are shipping release candidates so that users can discover problems that exist and help us debug them. The fact that you are not around does not mean that you can't debug. You have logs from the file servers that you can use and if you know the IP addresses of the clients you can run tcpdump on the server to log the incoming traffic from those clients. The next release candidate, 1.4.1-rc7, should be released tonight. It will include a number of fixes for the file server as well as the clients on just about every platform. You didn't answer the other questions that I asked. In particular the question regarding the VPN and NATs. Your answer to these questions are important if you would like us to be able to assist you.
