Well, it's been a week since I posed the mentioned question. I'll
take this opportunity to offer a reminder to speak up in case this
proposal affects you. I'll wait another week before taking the
proposal further.
Any sort of opinion, pro or con, is invited.

support for Solaris versions older than 2.6 (ie: 2.0 - 2.5.1) could
be cut out, this really reducing the #ifdef mess.

1.5 development branch only.
