Tried your suggestion, now there is a "network path not found" error
message.

It may be XP related too since the 2003 servers work OK.

I too have seen this.  Stopping the AFS client service and deleting the 
AFSCache file fixed the problem for me.

I figured it was just a corrupt local client cache issue.
