I take it the ZFS patch did not make it into 1.4.8?

no.

I tried applying it to 1.4.8 and got this:

# patch -p0<zfs.patch
Looks like a unified context diff.
Hunk #4 failed at line 304.
Hunk #5 failed at line 590.
Hunk #6 failed at line 38.
Hunk #7 failed at line 39.
Hunk #8 failed at line 34.
Hunk #9 failed at line 35.
6 out of 9 hunks failed: saving rejects to ./src/afs/SOLARIS/osi_file.c.rej
I can't seem to find a patch in there anywhere.

Which patch are you trying? I sent three versions:

11/11/2008 Solaris-vnode-path.txt against 1.4.8pre3
11/12/2008 Solairs-vnode-path-2.txt against 1.4.8
11/13/2008 Solaris-vnode-path-3.txt against 1.4.8 submitted on 11/18 to RT

Check out:
<URL: http://rt.central.org/rt/Ticket/Display.html?id=123677 >

Its now called:
solaris-fs-agnostic-cache-20081130 which you can download.

Attached is a new patch using the AFS_CACHE_VNODE_PATH.
This fixes the if (ainode < 0) problem by removing it, and goes back to
using the 64 bit ainode. Thus all the code changes are in SOLARIS/osi_file.c
and the parm.<sysname>.h files.
