Anti-virus is not an issue, I don't think, since the problem only arises
with AFS copying, not with scp or copying from NFS shares.
It depends how the anti-virus works. There's a case in RT, unresolved,
where anti-virus software on the Mac was causing a problem.

No. I disabled Symantec Auto-Protect, removed the -memcache flag, and
the problem manifested itself again.
