The questions I'd first ask are
-is anti-virus in play?
-is VPN in play?
Anti-virus is not an issue, I don't think, since the problem only arises
with AFS copying, not with scp or copying from NFS shares.
It depends how the anti-virus works. There's a case in RT, unresolved,
where anti-virus software on the Mac was causing a problem.
So, anti-virus or no?
No. I disabled Symantec Auto-Protect, removed the -memcache flag, and the
problem manifested itself again.
Does it load a kernel module, even if disabled?
Wasn't sure. Uninstalled it entirely, using a script provided by
Symantec, and it appeared that a kernel module was involved, and was
removed by the uninstaller. Rebooted, and the problem persisted even in
the absence of the kernel module.
