Few are aware that OpenAFS can be built to support IBM TSM as a virtual tape controller via the XBSA API. AWS S3 could be added in a similar manner.
The primary thing that I would want to add whenever storing backups off-site is encryption. AFS3 volume dumps are unencrypted. I would pipe the dump stream through a block cipher before passing it into the AWS CLI.
