Have to be careful to test the right branch (not master), then it should be ok. I don't think there is a major change in plugin compilation, but have to wait for the resolution for your issue to tell where the problem is. The build system with cmake is good in my opinion, but it is not static since it's maintained and developed along with the library, so some breakage can happen.
