.chm files are really, really old. For many reasons, I'd suggest you use 
ChemDraw to convert all these files to CDX, CDXML, or SDF or similar modern 
format.

IIRC, this was ChemDraw like v3.0 or something?

There are ways to automate ChemDraw for conversion (e.g., on Mac):

In any case, I've never seen any documentation on the .chm format, and I know 
that the ChemDraw developers would rather see the newer format used.
