Thank you for the response, Geoff. Unfortunately, the need I have is to convert
files provided to me into viewable form regardless of what format they
currently are in. I have no say in what the files look like, and in many cases
they are old restores or archival files.
Just using the newer format isn't really an option in this case.
What I'm trying to do is avoid purchasing a copy of chemdraw if I can avoid it,
as I won't actually even be using it for any purpose other than the file
conversion.

.chm files are really, really old. For many reasons, I'd suggest you use
ChemDraw to convert all these files to CDX, CDXML, or SDF or similar modern
format.
IIRC, this was ChemDraw like v3.0 or something?

There are ways to automate ChemDraw for conversion (e.g., on Mac):

In any case, I've never seen any documentation on the .chm format, and I know
that the ChemDraw developers would rather see the newer format used.
