okay this is good news, but only slightly! :)

the fact the mysql.jar worked under Jetty, but NOT under tomcat causes 
concern for me.

however, your "P.S." was i think a fairly MAJOR CLUE!  ;-)

So you ran Jetty under 1.4, but tomcat under 1.5?

When reporting bugs, its vitally important to give as much informtation 
as possible.  Different JVMs do have a huge influence on things.
