This has been a fascinating thread, really.

As a potential cookie issue, couldn't that possibly tie-in to Matt's 
discovery of the "JETTY-336 413 error for full header buffer" bug?
After all, cookies are part of the header, right? It could be that the 
contents or length of the cookie were pushing the bug's button?
