I know that apache is running because I have explicitly restarted it
many times. When I add the port 80 to the virtualhost ("<VirtualHost *:
80> " instead of "<VirtualHost *> ") I get the following error:

"[error] VirtualHost *:80 -- mixing * ports and non-* ports with a
NameVirtualHost address is not supported, proceeding with undefined
results"

I think I tried adding this before, but removed it when I received
this error.  And unfortunately the DirectoryIndex seems to have no
effect on my issue, whether it is there or not.
