Just to reiterate what I said in my last email, you don't have to build from source. That's not what I'm saying. What I'm saying is that you need to be using one of these installers:
http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/5.1.html#macosx-dmg

And NOT something like this:
http://www.mamp.info/en/index.html

If you used the latter, then I'd strongly suspect that's where the problem lies.

Using an installer for the Mac that you downloaded directly from mysql.com is the way to go. The way they configured MySQL for that MAMP package only works with the MAMP stuff and is not at all set up to be a generalized MySQL server.
