paraphrase Ubuntu always needs any command of significance to be run via sudu, like sudo reboot sudo tomcat/bin/startup.sh sudo mkdir There is no user who can log in as "root" per se (no matter what you called "him" when you installed it). That's one of the security gimmicks of Ubuntu.
