That might not exactly be true--Alan would have to chime in on that (and
looks like he did). With version 1.4 OpenBD is still GPL but basically has
the equivalent of a classpath exception, meaning if I want to distribute an
app with OpenBD as the engine, I can do that. I couldn't find the blog post
of this but that was a change as of 1.4 I believe.

For all intents and purposes, OBD is basically in the same boat as

Yeah, I really don't think that's true any longer, and at a minimum I think
you'll find we're a bit more receptive to discussion than Adobe would be on
that point. ;-)

If I can distribute a CFML app I wrote with OpenBD now I don't see how
distirbuting it with CFE is different, but as Alan said, depending on what
specifically you're trying to accomplish I'm sure we can work something out.

I still see the "user" in this context as a coder. How many end users

The point there is users get bit in the ass even if they don't know what
specifically is biting them. Should they care about the details of the
licenses? I guess not. Should they care about having the freedom to do what
they want with their computer and what's on it and have the peace of mind
that no one can take this freedom away? Hell yes.

Not enough regular Joes care about that stuff, but granted it's a hard sell
*until* they get bit by someone like Apple telling them what they can and
can't do with their music (just as one example). That's always a great "in"
to start talking about free software in general.
