thanks for the reply but server it is set up on 1433 and working. anyway all other app servers (uncluding OBD 1.3) are using very same settings and they work - the admin verifies - however the application code throws this error on cfquery.
trying to work out what is different about this instance - it is ready to run jetty deployment (as is the working 1.3 instance). I'm on vista 64 bit.
