I would put zero trust in that particular story ... MySQL is just like
any other tool, if used and designed properly then it will perform
perfectly for you, even at scale. Come to OpenCFSummit and i will tell
you how, as i have a session on scale.
There is no magic bullet when it comes databases; just like any loaded
gun, they all have the ability to blow your foot off
his conclusions are wrong about paying for something because its better
... completely nonsense and shows a complete lack of understanding of
how the open source community operates.

As always YMMV, and you may never have these sorts of issues (I
haven't), but I have ran into a similar predicament in the past with
FOSS. That said, David's post is always in the back of my head when
making these sorts of decisions.
