GAE does support a traditional database: Google Cloud SQL (MySQL). It's kind of unfortunate this isn't maintained anymore, I was trying to build some small apps recently and immediately went to OpenBD, but then I couldn't find any documentation on GoogleWrite() despite being mentioned in wiki pages which was confusing...
What's actually blocking OpenBD now?
