Are you sure about that? I use CouchDB with OpenBD on a daily basis, which
is pure JSON over HTTP, and I do not have to do what you're outlining here.

I haven't used elasticsearch yet (just about to get into it for a project)
but this would definitely be different behavior than what I see with
CouchDB.

Are there any settings on elasticsearch that let you return things in
different ways? If you use a method other than delete with elasticsearch
does it behave the same way?
