Jason,

I have not tried that (commenting out vhosts) - since it was a
behavior that was happening since install.

The server has 4 quad-core AMD processors, 1 gig ram and many
gigs of HD space. System is running right now with 232 megs free
ram, very responsive with a low system load (from top or uptime).

I could very easily up the ram to 2 gigs. Also when that delay is
in process the load (from uptime/top) is about half or less the
normal running load on the server... so cpu load isn't spiking
durring the start up.
