At this point I want to repeat my inital comment - I think it was not really noticed :)

What about creating the "notification" mails on-the-fly when sending them and just put a new status-column in the database's "certificate" table ?

The volume is the problem. Mails can have an unlimited length which can only be supported by BLOBs. These BLOBs are not standardized by SQL92 (or do you know a new standard for this). So a powerfull filesystem is perhaps the better solution.

The notification Mail is not in the DB, only the CRIN is in, I think everybody can live with a reasonable length limit for this mail. MySQL and PG currently support at least 64k Chars as Text - I think this is more than enough for a PIN....
