unable to write 'random state'
Using configuration from
/var/ca/openca/etc/openssl/openssl/CA_Operator.conf
entry 1: invalid expiry date
unable to write 'random state'

The important message is "entry 1: invalid expiry date". This is the result of a damaged index.txt of OpenSSL. See OPENCADIR/var/crypto/index.txt. You can use the rebuild link on the "backup and recovery" page to create a correct index.txt. Initially this file must be empty. Even no newlines!

If index.txt is damaged then the OpenSSL command "ca" doesn't work. If you didn't issue any certs simply remove all data from index.txt. If you have already some certificates then use OpenCA's rebuild command.
