thanks for your advice. I checked the --with-openssl-prefix
and it is set to /usr which is, I believe, the correct setting
when openssl 0.9.7 is installed by the distribution (debian
sarge in my case). So I'd say this is not my problem. Next I
tried to install OpenSSL:X509 by hand - well, with CPAN ;-) -
and that turned out to be the actual prob. I receive the following
error when doing
perl -MCPAN -e 'install OpenSSL::X509'

those missing header errors go on forever and finally come to
the point where the installation breaks with
OpenSSL.c: In function `XS_OpenSSL__BN_DESTROY':
OpenSSL.c:2798: error: parse error before "bn"
OpenSSL.c:2802: error: `bn' undeclared (first use in this function)
OpenSSL.c:2802: error: called object is not a function
make: *** [OpenSSL.o] Error 1
/usr/bin/make -- NOT OK
As far as I understand it I'm missing some header information somehow
but I can't figure out which package might provide those.
Is there a complete listing of all the prerequisites that must be
met in order to successfully compile and install OpenCA? The normal
list as found in the installation document is obviously not complete.
