I copied debug output while calling openssl to commandline. Result was a "Memory fault - core dumped". openssl version is 0.9.7d running on debian-unstable x86, kernel 2.6.5. Openssl is from openssl.org. Same happened with openssl binaries distributed by debian.org. An openssl snapshot (0.9.8-dev) solved that problem.
