I think the true situation with MFC cards requires to be investigated.
You, Mr. Hansmann, and Mr. Schaeck, have sought to assure posters to this
list that the MFC family of cards is alive and well, and actively
developed and supported by Comcard.
This is far from the case. Over the last month I have mailed both of you,
this list, Comcard, IBM itself, and individual members of this list in
search of the information required to use MFC cards, and I have discovered
the following:
a) Of all members of this list who have tried to initialise MFC cards who
responded to me, none have ever succeeded, and have abandoned them in
favour of cards from another manufacturer.
b) IBM and members of IBM keep complete silence about this issue - Mr.
Hansmann forwarded me some information a few months ago, but it was
inadequate to even begin to initialise the cards correctly.
c) Comcard, at length, admitted to me that THEY THEMSELVES do not have
the information required to initialise these cards, because IBM has
not supplied it to them!
In short, I would strongly advise anyone considering working with MFC
cards to first thoroughly ensure that they have access to all commands
necessary to create a valid MF on the card, and have had them fully tested,
or that they have cards somehow sent to them already initialised.
For my own part, my strong suspicion is that MFC cards at the (current) 4.21
level either contain some serious flaw which prevents them from ever being
used, or that the information required to initialise them by creating a
valid Master File (MF) has somehow been destroyed and is no longer available.
I challenge IBM employees and others on this list to disprove this assertion
by either publishing or forwarding to me a set of APDUs that will fully
initialise and personalise an MFC 4.21 card. I have wasted over six
weeks searching for this information from all relevant parties; I have
been led to conclude that it is not available, and that the MFC platform
is no longer viable.
