I recognized a same failure in the beginning of my project, and solved
the problem by reinstalling the opsystem (under win98, solaris would be
a bit difficult). I connected the reader to the serial port (COM1,
phisically!!! port, not a logical port), after the opsystem got me an
unknownd device back, this was the reader and works now fine:-)
The reader cannot use other port or other resource, than COM1. If you
install the scard based component, you should have seen an error
message, called 10544. This menas, the reader cannot connect correctly
to the computer:-)
Use the gemplus driver downloaded from www.gemplus.fr/developers
