Alain: Maybe so but there will never be as many exchanges on this
subject as there is now. We cant have one licence for the beginning
then change it substantially en-route. Once the licence is decide upon,
it will remain substantially the same thereafter, unless some kind of
grave error is committed in its inception stage (now). As for the
philosophical questions concerning what it is to be OPEN, they will
surely take place but they may have little or nothing to do with the
licencing issue, and will probably be dealt with a Politics list or
something similar.

Anthony: A licence list would be useful for discussion of the licence
and for deciding if we wish to litigate against someone who abuses it,
for example. It would also be useful for discussion of the special
exceptions (making other arrangements with the copyright holder).

Alain: You and Mark Rauterkus have persuaded me that a Licence List
would be a good idea.

Anthony: We already have a politics list. We can get a licence list
easily.

Alain: You could ask our current list-mom to create a new list.

Anthony: Is your EIMS working, now?

Alain : I am afraid not.

>Alain: Mail filtering doesnt seem widespread.
>I wonder why. Its so simple.

Anthony: a) There are people in backwater nations who must pay for
their internet access either by time spent online or by bytes
transferred (unlike here in the US)

Alain: Right. I forgot.

Anthony: b) Not all mail software supports filtering

Alain: Right. I would suggest that such a person change their mail
client software though!

Anthony: c) Getting simple filters set up is fairly simple. But it's
not when you have a lot of filters. I have, for example, 3 screenfulls
of Eudora filters.

Alain: Sounds like a job for HyperCard or OpenCard, eh!

>Alain: Lets wait a little longer so that everyone
>has the time to respond to your suggestion to make a
>separate Licence mailing list, and for me to get the
>UFPs approval for hosting it.

Anthony: I'd like to keep on UNIX as much as possible, honestly.

Alain: I am a 100% Mac Addict. I dont fool with dweeby stuff like UNIX.
They tell me its great though!

Anthony: And as long as ListBot or Metacard is doing the hosting, it's
probably less likely for some lowlife (e.g., a thief) to screw it up.

Alain: OK, but the same reasoning could apply equally well to our web
site and FTP space. To be perfectly secure that might have to hosted
elsewhere too. Know anyone? Just speculation for now though.

>Mark Rauterkus : And, a ghost-town is perfectly
>okay as an alternative.

>Alain : I dont agree.

Anthony: What's wrong with a list with no messages? It's there for when
you need it.

Alain: For one, it is a sub-optimal exploitation of computing
resources. Which isnt the end of the world, of course. More
importantly, it would divide our small group into ever smaller cells
that may be too small to survive. When a list goes quiet for a long
time and/or no one responds to your posts, then its members will scatter.
