Hello,
I hope I'm don't seem to importunate for the moment when I say these things:
- Make up your mind!! First you complain and find it annoying that new
people to OCF ask questions about configuration settings and install
procedures for certain development tools. But later you write and I quote:
"...and newbies questions on OCF capabilities or settings/configuration
are also very welcome. ..."
- Secondly, who are you to decide which development platform people should
use and which not. Off course each environment has its drawbacks but
whether you like it or not you have to deal with the fact that people have
different opinions and use other tools because we might be a little more
openminded and less focused on one certain technology or programming
language. For instance, VJ++ is a java-alike language with certain
advantages of Java and other added features from MS. So your "it's not
Java"-statement is strange as you working in a research department of
Gemplus. One could think that researchers are above all people eager to
explore new technologies and added possibilities. Apparently you want to
keep developing Java-applications in edit.com in some kind of dos-mode.
- Finally and happily, you have one good point: the FAQ-list for
configuration/settings if OCF. Keep in mind, be openminded so also include
the developing environments you don't like.
Kind regards,
Davy

Hello,

Thanks Tom. I would like to take the occasion to say a few words
about the mailing-list. Although it has been very active recently
(even more than the alt..sc newsgroup), which is good, it would be
nice for everybody if we all follow a few rules.
o Firstly, "subscribe" and "unsubscribe" requests should be sent
to [EMAIL PROTECTED], *NOT* to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
directly. This is exaplined at the end of EVERY messages! I'm
still amazed that people wouldn't understand this.. :-(
o Secondly, questions on specific Java environments (how to ...
in Jbuilder? how to ... in J++? etc.): please contact your
support or use plain JDK commands like me, for which you'll never
have any problem! This is a mailing-list to talk about OCF, not
Borland, Microsoft, or Symantec issues! There are other supports
forums or mailing-lists for that! Besides, just DO NOT USE J++ !
It is not Java! It doesn't handle JNI and so the javax.comm API
cannot work in J++. Use a real Java instead! (more info at:
http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nm/20000125/tc/microsoft_sun_2.html)
o At last, as Tom mentionned, questions on a specific vendor product
(smartcard, reader, or development platform) can usually be better
addressed to the relevant forum or hotline email or mailing-list
run by this vendor. For instance, all questions related to the new
GemXpresso RAD environment are quickly addressed by a very good
hotline team in the Gemplus Developers forum:
http://www.gemplus.fr/developers/passwd_protected/discus/index.html
As some development platforms use OCF (it's the case for
GemXpresso RAD), it's up to you to decide if your question
relates to the specific product hot-line channels (e.g.,
configuration, question on functionality, etc.) or if it is
of interest for all OCF users (e.g., comments on OCF APIs,
requests for new OCF optional packages, general questions
on smart cards middleware, etc.).
Also the classical "netiquette", suggested for newsgroups, apply
as well to the list, e.g., use ASCII, not HTML; try to summarize
the parts of the article to which you are responding instead of
including the entire article; etc. See all FAQs at:
http://www.faqs.org/faqs/by-newsgroup/news/news.announce.newusers.html
I hope I did not seem too importunate to the mailing-list readers
but I think this very large common place is a nice thing to maintain
alive, and if there are too many offtopic messages, people will start
to unsubscribe. Of course questions about general smart card use or
new ideas are welcome (they might influence what OCF will become in
the future!) and newbies questions on OCF capabilities or settings/
configuration are also very welcome. Next month, I will try to start
a technical FAQ related to problems that people usually encounter
when starting working with OCF (e.g., Comm API config etc.).
Cheers,
Christophe.
