The JavaCard platformn is a multiapplication platform, so you can have
several applets installed in the card. An Applet installed in a JavaCard
can become active in two ways.

1. It is the default applet in the card, that means after insertion of
the card into the terminal and the activation of the card, this applet
is selected by the JCRE and becomes the active applet in the card. The
applet becomes active when the JCRE calls the select method of the
applet. After this all APDU's that you send now to the card will go to
this applet and handeld by this applet.

2. You select an applet via the SELECT command (described in the JCRE
spec and based on ISO 7816-4). After a succesfull SELECT command this
applet is now active in the card and will deal with all incomming
APDU's.

If you whant to communicate with an applets in a JavaCard you need to
have a terminal application (running e.g. on the PC) that send and
recsives APDU's to the card and to the applet. The perfect way to write
application talking to a smartcard application or a JavaCard applet is
the OCF.
