Hi,
I am not sure if I can call the issue solved, but I changed the monitor to
a LG Flatron 1750S and now I get 1280x1024 without any problem.
There was an automatic system updated right before it started to work, so
I can not say what exactrly has caused the system to work fine.
Anyway, thank you very much for the support.

ps: the old monitor was a LG Studioworks 440S
