DX lets you write successively to the same miff file, this lends itself well to
conversion to animated gif or mpeg via ImageMagick.  If you're generating these
gifs for the web and the images are made in response to each client, take a
look at the java explorer/jx/javadx function (whatever we're calling it
nowadays) of opendx:
