Many thanks to Suhaib Siddiqi. I'd had rhnsd shut down since day one,
but doing this, as he suggested, fixed my problem. The opendx tutorials
now work fine:
# rpm -Fvh /home/smitty/rpms/*

/home/smitty/rpms/glibc-2.1.94-3.i386.rpm
