Are you saying that the choice of file for storing these
things, cannot be controlled by the OpenDX code itself?

Most programs I know use a $HOME/.<app>/ directory for
storing application settings; e.g. $HOME/.dx/

That could go into a preferences file, e.g. $HOME/.dx/prefs.
