I have written a HDF5 data importer module for OpenDX.

We are using this module to visualize simulation data calculated by
Cactus, which is a (opensource) parallel programming framework
(www.cactuscode.org).

We visualize HDF5 data from file or socket-stream (patched-) HDF5 from the
running simulation into OpenDX.

You get the module when you download Cactus or I can send you a
tarfile if there is any interest.
