Since no one has answered these questions, I will see if I can help.
Hello. I have just installed OpenDX and Exceed3D on my Windows98 machine, and I'm starting to learn how to use it. I am able to invoke dx -edit and I have spent some time looking at many of the sample programs. Everything seems to be working fine and I am very keen to delve further into the program's capabilities. I am not having any success with Data Prompter, and the behaviour I'm seeing seems to deviate rather quickly from that described in the Quickstart Guide. I start the Data Prompter with dx -prompter and get the initial window shown on pg. 99 of the guide. I type into the text field the name of the data file I want to look at: E:\opendx\samples\data\irregular.dx then I select Data Explorer file. According to the guide I should now be able to choose to browse the data file, test the import of the file into DX, or have DX visualize the data automatically. First, I see no way to invoke the browse data file. The guide suggests (pg. 109) that clicking the ellipsis button will lead to a Browse option, but this is not the case. I see only a couple of file paths. I do see activated buttons for Test Import and Visualize Data under the Data Explorer file button. If I click Test Import the Visual Program Editor is started, with a blank screen. The Initial Data Prompter window meanwhile seems to be locked up, displaying the clock cursor and not responding.
The Data Explorer file "*.dx" is a special case. It does not provide a way to browse it directly with the Browser because its already in a format that DX can read and you don't need to actually look at the file. If you want, you can look at the file with just a text editor. The browser is mainly available for the Grid or Scattered formats since you may need to look at the file to determine its layout. If things are locking up, then I would say the version you are using is either not quite set up correctly or may need to be tested further.
So far I haven't been able to find out how to get to use either the Simplified or the Full Data Prompter.
This is used when importing Grid or Scattered Data. If you select that portion of the prompters panel you can click on Describe Data... to bring up the simplified prompter (which then allows you to select the full prompter).
Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong (apart from using Windows :-)? I would also be grateful if someone could let me know how I can delete characters in text fields, e.g. how to get Backspace functionality.
Are you talking about problems using text fields in the GUI? If you are, I'd suggest trying the new version--if that doesn't work for you, I'd suggest waiting until our version (which we will be selling) becomes available.
David
