xanim works with gif animations (single or multiple files).

The mpeg player plug-in in Netscape for RH and IRIX seems to work fine with
such MPEG files.  Movieplayer (I think that's the name) on IRIX also works
ok.

There are also some 3rd party mpeg players for Linux...

I still have an old copy of xanim for playing mpgs on unix. Google
search for it cause I have no idea where you get it these days.
