I have begun using OpenDX and it seems very estensible. The home page of OpenDX gives the impression that it is dead because many of the links to who uses OpenDX are old links. On the other hand, the mailing list indicates that the project is alive. The "dx -builder" has too few options, I just had to guess how to say that the input was a file name. I mention dx builder as an example because if one wants to extend OpenDX then it is necessary to have the documentation and tools. Though there are many example, for any specific task there are just one or two examples -- given that there are so many different tasks. My very limited experience has been the VTK is more difficult to use and more limited. Though object-oriented, VTK often bombed-out without explanation when I made small changes that I thought were legal.
