There was a report earlier about Redhat 7.2 and its default
firewalling causing a problem. You may search the archives on that.

David,
Thanks for the reply. I agree completely that the problem suggests
a network config problem, but I can't find the source. the
/etc/hosts file is OK. when I am disconnected to the network, I can
ping the localhost or the real hostname successfully. I don't know
linux much, but every file I know of is configured to look in
/etc/hosts before going to dns.
I think that RedHat 7.2 has some differences with prior versions in
that an ifconfig command does not seem to be saved on a reboot, so
there may be .conf files that I need to change, but at the moment I
am at a loss on where to look next. I'll be searching the /etc
directory for now.
Thanks very much for your ideas.

I have not had this problem. Is it possible that you don't have
your networking quite setup correctly? I would say that this error
message is a result of trying to connect to some named computer
where its requiring a dns lookup--since you're not on the network
it can't resolve the name. Make sure that you have your machine
setup to do hosts based resolution before dns and that your hosts
file contains your machines name/ip address.
