First let me say--get a copy of OpenDX: Paths to Visualization. This
is in one of the lessons.
Second, use Compute(a.0) to decompose the vector into just the x
component and then send the output to AutoColor. Easy as that.

If I used "AutoColor" to color a vector field, the vector glyphs are colored
based on the magnitude of the vector data.
Can someone suggest a quick way to color the vector glyphs based on
individual components of the data field? In other words, I want to display
the vector glyphs as I normally do (using AutoGlyph), but have the ability
to color them based not on the vector magnitude but rather on the magnitude
of the x-, y-, or z-component of the vectors.
Thanks,
Joel Risner
