I never had serious problems with OpenDX on Mandrake. I have used OpenDX 4.1.3 under the two last versions of Mandrake and 4.2 under Mandrake 9. I asked the Mandrake team for 4.2 rpms, but they said they had difficulty compiling it...

Anyway, I compiled 4.2 myself on both dirstributions. Admittedly, I had some problems under Mandrake 9, which I reported in a message to the opendx-dev mailing list some months ago (you could find it at the archives).

I have always used OpenDX with OpenMotif libraries instead of the lesstif ones supplied with Mandrake, and I have observed more consistent and stable behavior. Maybe your problems are partly related to this issue. The rpms I am currently using are openmotif-2.1.30-5_ICS.i586.rpm and the corresponding devel package.

I don't know for Suse, but for Mandrake I was astonished to see that in the last distribution (9.0) they didn't include the last OpenDX version (4.2), just the old 4.1 rpms. Is the 4.2 version with the set of libraries on Mandrake hard to compile, or too unreliable? Already when using the 4.1 version on Mandrake with the provided samples I get errors, or crashes which make the use of OpenDX on Mandrake a discouraging experience.
