I wouldn't think that would be the problem. What about if you start
the uionly and then see if you can connect to a server. Are you sure
that your hostname stuff is all good. A lot of times I've seen
problems like this if the hostname may have problems, ie a
misspelling in the /etc/hosts file.

Thanks for the advice.
1. it runs if I start up the dxexec 'by hand' with dx -execonly and
connect the ui to it.
2. it does not work if I choose the 'Run Visual Program' option and
have the dxui start the dxexec.
In this case the dxexec start up fine (in the Message Window I get
the 'Starting DX executive .... port=1900 etc. messages) but in the
terminal window the dx prints:
DXLink Error: Connection to DX broken
Can not determine server version number!
It almost seems as if there is some timing error with dx not waiting
long enough for the dxexec to start listening on the port. Is this
possible?
