Is this really necessary?  What if I want to plot the curve as two disjoint
segments (useful for a discontinuous function like sgn).  Furthermore, for
unstructured grids in multi-D this does not make too much sense.

In this special case, I would create a field for each segment with segment-specific positions, connections and data.
This could also work in 3D.
