Thanks for the heads-up on installing the bzip2-devel rpm.  The configure
script now reports the presence of a complete ImageMagick package.

I looked inside the libMagick.la file to get an idea on the library being
linked as you suggested but it only listed '-lbz2' - is there another file
that translates 'bz2' into a definitive pathname to the desired bzip2
library?

Please forgive me if this is a uber-newbie question; I haven't compiled
large software too often so I'm learning as I go.  In fact, if someone can
suggest a reference or two for general knowledge in large software
compilation on Unix systems I would appreciate it; I already have the
O'Reilly book on Make, but it seems the biggest problems are with
libraries?

You need to install the bzip2-devel rpm as well so it can find the
headers and library. The other thing to check is that ImageMagick
uses libtool, so you can look in its libMagick.la file and see what
bzip2 lib its trying to link to.
