You need to follow the steps of trying to connect manually and see
what happens.
1. Start the user interface, dx -uionly &
2. Start the executive, dx -execonly
3. In the user interface, select Connect to Server... from the Connect menu.
4. Click Options in the Connect dialog and then select "Connect to
already running server"
5. Click "OK" then "Connect"
What happens? If it connects okay, then there is just a problem with
the communication layer starting your executive and we can go from
there.

I am still setting DXHOST to 'unix'. I have also tried setting it to
other things, but that didn't seem to work either.
