Attach a Compute with hard-coded value 1 (no inputs) to the "rendermode" input of Image. You have to select Image, hit Ctrl-F, Expand, then Unhide this (2nd) input. Do this when you rig up the net. Forever after, it should render in h/w. Until you move the net to a friend's machine with no h/w rendering and it hangs or crashes. (:-) (Defaults were chosen rather intelligently).

I immediately went to the docs looking at the environment variables
figuring there was a way to do this--but I don't see one. If you are
in desparate need of this and feel like implementing it, I believe it
would be a good environment variable/command line option. Maybe
something like DXHWBYDEFAULT -hwByDefault.

Is there a way to make the Image tool use hardware rendering by
default?
