The Categorize module does exactly this. It was built for binning data (string, scalar, you name it). The should be pretty easy and straight forward to achieve if you look at how categorize works. If you purchase our book "OpenDX: Paths to Visualization" we have an example for doing cateogrical data.

Q: anyone out there using DX for statistical counting of logfile entries?

-- I had been working with SGI's MineSet and was able to make a simple 2d/3d chart of 'page requested' and 'ip/hostname' (with the Z axis incrementing on duplicate entries)- it was a nice way of looking at this data. From what I can tell about briefly looking at the DX modules, it would involve a counting or indexing function, but will DX count/bin string data? I think MineSet had some built-in statistical datamining features that may not be in DX. (?? anyone used MineSet and can compare?)

-thanks
